Airbags

Airbag Compatability

When driving on country roads, accidental animal strikes are sometimes unavoidable. The latest in occupant safety has seen the introduction of the airbag which inflates in the unfortunate occurrence of a traffic accident.

Concerns have been raised that nudgebars, roobars and bullbars can effect the deployment timing of airbags. Australian Driving Regulation 69 (ADR69) is a vehicle occupant safety rule that requires that aftermarket modifications or accessories demonstrate that these products have been tested and/or comply with those federal rulings.

So with this in mind the research and development team at IRVIN BULLBARS, along with information gathered from independent automotive engineers and the Bullbar Working Group of the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association (AAAA) have concluded that properly engineered and fitted frontal protection systems have a limited effect on the crash pulse of the vehicle.

The crush rate of vehicles fitted with an airbag should not be altered when a vehicle frontal protection system (VFPS) is fitted. Testing is continuing and an ever-growing range of airbag compatible, front-end protection bars are now available. Further testing and design is being carried out continually to keep up with the latest information from the AAAA and from vehicle manufacturers.

It's probably worth mentioning that ADR69 makes no mention of frontal protection bars. A draft standard has been proposed in relation to occupant safety, but as a responsible manufacturer, IRVIN BULLBARS has in mind to design the right product that will not effect the correct operation of the airbag or the vehicle manufacturers preset crumple rate.
