Steel vs. Aluminium Bullbars – Which is Better?

Its an interesting campfire conversation when it comes to steel or alloy bullbars.  There are a number of questions that you need to ask when deciding which bullbar is right for you. The first thing that people usually consider is what the bullbar looks like and how good it will look on their rig, but let’s face it there is more to a bull bar than looking good. You should also consider what it is made out of, what it is designed to do and how effectively it will give frontal protection for your vehicle.

Let’s take a look at steel and alloy bull bars and the differences between them.

When it comes to the question of which bullbar is best, you will always find plenty of vehicle owners with differing and passionate opinions. Basically, it all really depends on the purpose, protection and price you want to pay. For example, steel is pretty popular because of its generally cheaper and the perceived increase in strength and the protection it provides. On the other hand there is the leaning toward aluminium bars as they are constructed using more materials, closing the gaps up, and are lighter (very important for GCM if towing).

Steel Bullbars

Our steel bullbars are manufactured from premium-grade steel. This means that they are perfect for use in difficult terrain. What’s also great about our steel bars is that they are easier to repair if you end up denting them whilst out on the open road. There is an incredibly high risk of animal strikes here in Western Australia so a steel bar is one add-on you can buy for your vehicle that makes you safer. When you buy your steel bullbar from us, you’re getting a premium, safe product at an affordable price. But beware, steel is more rigid, so although can take a bigger hit, might end up damaging the chassis of the vehicle first.

Aluminium Bullbars

Aluminium bullbars are durable and are generally lighter and perform as well if not better (when constructed cleverly) than the more rigid steel bullbars, with the advantage of being able to close in the gaps and they weigh less. However, just because alloy bullbars are lighter doesn’t mean they’re necessarily weaker. Don’t be tricked into thinking that just because alloy bullbars are lighter that they are weaker, as most quality-made alloy bullbars are extremely tough and durable. So they are great if you tow a caravan and need to think about your GCM and don’t wish to add on too much weight to your vehicle (which means you can add that extra carton of beer!). Additionally, they are generally easy to upkeep with a little bit of attention occasionally. Aluminium bullbars are very long-lasting and durable but are usually more expensive than their steel counterparts.

So, What’s Best?

It’s really up to you, the driver. If you are more of a traditionalist then you might feel that you need the strength and heaviness of a steel bullbar. Bear in mind though that depending on your vehicle, you may need to upgrade your suspension due to the added weight. Aluminium bars can be manufactured in a way that reduces the size of the gaps and are generally lighter, although they could be higher maintenance.
